Human Trafficking In Romania
David Batstone is a professor of business at the University of San Francisco and the co-founder and president of Not For Sale, which fights human trafficking and slavery. This story is reprinted in it's entirety from Not For Sale Campaign and CNN. We applaud and support David's efforts. Orphaned girls of Ukraine, Moldova and Romania are the primary traffick victims.
(CNN) -- Romania has become a major transit for the sale of people into the European Union. Victims as young as 12 years old are trafficked into Romania from destinations as far-reaching as Honduras, Afghanistan, the Congo, and China. Once they reach Romania, many of these victims are assigned for passage beyond into Western Europe.

Back then we were smuggling bibles behind the Iron Curtain. Things have certainly changed in Eastern Europe! The Soviet Union is gone and Eastern Europe as it was known no longer exists.

Governments in Russia and Ukraine have recognized the depth of the crisis and have taken steps to establish a legal method for families to take in "social orphans" in what they call a "family type orphanage". This is a good development, though extremely difficult.
